I offer you not just a massage treatment, but a learning experience and a journey towards better self-awareness.
When you arrive at the clinic reception, please help yourself to a glass of water if you wish and take a seat on one of the comfy sofas in the waiting area.
You will be greeted by myself and my friendly guide dog, Jenni. Once Jenni has said ‘hello’, she will remain a quiet presence in the room.
What Brings you here?
This is the first thing I like to find out about you and the possibilities are numerous.
When you suddenly realise that you need a massage, it might be because you have pain or tension in your body, you are having difficulty moving, or you feel stressed and run-down. These feelings have probably been creeping up on you for some time, but now, something has tipped the balance for you and you want to resolve the issue.
Maybe you spend long hours at your computer desk and that is starting to take its toll on your back, neck, shoulders and wrists. The constant pressure of deadlines may be starting to feel overwhelming. You may be very active at home or at work and your body and mind have simply not had the chance to recover.
Perhaps you are living with a long-term illness or disability and need to manage the symptoms and the stress they bring, rather than finding a cure.
Maybe something happened to you a long time ago, which you thought you had put behind you, but still rears its unpleasant head from time to time.
Whatever has brought you here, this probably did not come on over-night. It has most likely been building up over several months, or even years. We cannot therefore realistically expect to fix such issues over-night either.
We need time to make lasting changes.
Clinical experience has taught me that you will gain more long-term benefit from receiving a course of treatment sessions over several weeks or months, rather than sporadic one-off sessions.
Working in this way allows you to receive thorough treatment, which is more likely to achieve results, rather than just bandaging you up and hoping for the best. This gives us time to work out the root cause of your symptoms, which may not be directly related to the area where you are feeling pain, tension or discomfort.
For example, what seems to be a shoulder problem may have started because your upper body is compensating for an imbalance in your pelvis. If I were to just treat your shoulder, it would be like applying the proverbial bandage; you may feel relief for a while, only for the symptoms to return later.
In contrast, if I treat your pelvis as well, and anything else which comes to light, then your whole body will be more balanced and will function better, so your shoulder can heal properly, with less chance of the old trouble returning.
This approach to therapy treats your body as a whole and is much more satisfying and rewarding for both you and me. It is not just a massage, but a learning experience and a journey towards better self-awareness.
What to wear and bring
Please arrive fresh and clean for your treatment. This makes the massage experience more pleasant for you, me and the clients who come after you!
I work directly on your skin wherever possible, as this achieves the best results. However, if you do not feel comfortable undressing down to your underwear, then please bring a pair of shorts and a thin vest-top with you if you have these.
You will also receive a better treatment if you do not wear any moisturisers or heavily perfumed products on your skin. Moisturisers hamper myofascial release techniques, which require a firm hold without sliding. Strong fragrances may clash with the aromas of essential oils and can be difficult to remove from the treatment room and linens.
Please keep jewellery to a minimum, to make dressing and undressing easier for yourself and to maximise your massage time during the session.
If you are not sure what medication you are taking, please bring this with you. I want to keep you safe whilst treating you and therefore need to be clear on what medicines you are taking and why.
Your First Treatment
I want you to receive the best possible treatment, which helps you to achieve your goals. I therefore offer you an initial 60 min session, in which we discuss your needs thoroughly and I assess your posture, movement and how your muscles and joints feel. I will also begin to treat any areas of your body which are causing immediate pain or which may be indirectly contributing to your discomfort.
We then evaluate whether the treatment has helped you. If we agree that your initial treatment was beneficial and if you feel that my style of treatment suits you, we will schedule in a course of treatment to suit your needs. Alternatively, if we feel that the treatment is not right for you, I will happily refer you to another expert practitioner, perhaps in a different field, who may be better able to help you.
Rehabilitation and self-care
If we decide to continue your treatment, I will give you a simple self-care or rehabilitation programme to follow. These exercises and tips will help you to benefit more from your treatment. You may find that you are more mobile and comfortable for longer, using your rehab programme which could nip any reoccurring symptoms in the bud.
