Have you enjoyed all the hot weather we’ve been having? Personally, I love it and can’t get enough sunshine. If you are a sun worshiper like me, then you will be pleased to hear that aromatherapy offers several ways to naturally protect your skin from the sun’s rays and also to help it heal if sunburn creeps up on you. For the most part, it is not good to apply oil to your skin before going out in the sun. In effect, putting oil on means that you roast or fry, rather than bake! However, there are a couple of exceptional oils which do afford some sun protection and are a good adjunct to sun screen (although not a substitute in strong sunlight). A 50-50 blend of sesame (depicted here) and olive oils are thought to be the best. However, carrot is also good, because the beta carotene which it contains helps us to produce melanin, our natural protective and tanning agent. Avocado is generally nourishing and jojoba (actually a liquid wax) has a similar structure to our own sebum, so is balancing for both dry and oily skin. So why not apply these as a nourishing body oil, under your sun screen? For best effects, use natural, unrefined oils. If you need a blend of these making up for you, give me a shout.
